Staying in the game

I’ve had more than my share of trouble the last couple of years. There’s a plethora of cliche’s available from motivators, religeous leaders and philosophers that pretty much all say life’s more about how you deal with the troubles than about how many of them come your way.

From my view, whether you invite trouble (if you do, it’s time to stop) or it just finds its way to your door, trouble will come. Worse yet, you’ll miss opportunities and you’ll squander some as well. I’m not in possession of any sage wisdom on overcoming obstacles, dodging trouble or seizing every opportunity. In fact, I may be dealing with more of this than I ever have.

I will share one thing that works in that it’s saved me from complete ruin so far. While I hope you’ll best every obstacle, there’s a third way between winning and losing. It’s refusing to give up. No matter how tough things get, don’t pick up the ball and go home. Stay in the game. If you lose the game, demand a rematch. You’re never really beat until you concede.

Extra Vitamins

As a guitar guy, B.B. King has been a source of musical inspiration to me since I was a pre-teen. There’s so much more to learn from this living American treasure. As I mature, I think BB’s success is a result of the man’s beautiful outlook even more than his boundless talent. He’s had the odds stacked against him for most of his life and has found happiness and success simply because he’s focused on the positives.

A couple of days every week I drive quite some distance for  a few hours of boring work that doesn’t pay much. BB’s unique view of the world recently inspired me to take even longer, alternate routes for the home bound leg that have made the trip worth while even if I hadn’t earned a penny.

“I got a chance to ride today on a very nice bus and from my window I can see how beautiful this country is and how nice it is to be alive and that to me is like extra vitamins.” – B.B. King

I’ll bet BB’s trip was a lot longer than mine. If you commute to work, I hope you’ll try a few extra vitamins too!

Thinking local

Ultra tight finances can really put the damper on summer vacations. That’s not to say you can’t visit an interesting place or experience something new with no budget at all. Even the smallest of communities offer abundant places of interest and recreation opportunities. A quick internet search of your local tourist attractions, local events, state parks, museums and community centers are a great place to start. Lately, I’ve tried focusing on places I can visit via foot or bicycle. The change of perspective makes even familiar places new again. Discovering local events also offers the opportunity to meet strange and exotic people…..your neighbors!

Keeping up with the Joneses

When I was married, so much of our time time was spent discussing what everyone else had and what they were doing with themselves. No matter how much time and wealth you may have, it will never be enough to keep up with everyone. Obsessing over this is a trap. The way to freedom is refusing to keep up with the Joneses no matter how wonderful they tell you their world is. That freedom is something the Joneses will never have and is something they will always envy.
