Brief History:

Magadan was the centre for Stalin's prison camps to which millions were deported. It was founded in 1933, just after some geologists had discovered gold in this part of Siberia. When Stalin was told that the gold had been found, he ordered a unit of the KGB to be given the task of extracting the gold by the use of prison labour.
